Pitt, Penn State win NCAA first-round matches, to face each other
UNIVERSITY PARK -- Penn State, the No. 1 overall seed of the NCAA Tournament, beat Howard 3-1 in the opening round at Rec Hall on Friday.
The Pittsburgh Panthers defeated Virginia Commonwealth University 3-1 earlier in the day and will face to Penn State in the second round on Saturday.
The Panthers took care of business in the first two sets 25-14 and 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Rams (30-3) bounced back in the third to force a fourth set 25-18, but couldn't outlast Pitt who posted a 25-13 win in the final go around.
In the second matchup of the night, Penn State took an early lead, winning the first set 25-10. Howard would edge out the second set 25-22 before the Nittany Lions took advantage of their middle blockers, Haleigh Washington and Tori Gorrell arms to win the next two, 25-15, 25-16, respectively.
The second round match between the Keystone rivals is set to take place at Rec Hall on Saturday at 7 p.m.
