UPJ Wrestling opens up with win over West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.V. -- No. 6 Pitt-Johnstown Wrestlers Roll Over #19 West Liberty, 38-0, to Open Season

The sixth-ranked Mountain Cat wrestlers got a fall from All-American Devin Austin at 165 lbs. and a 3-2 win by Levi Niebauer in a battle nationally-ranked wrestlers at 197 lbs. on their way to a lopsided, 38-0, victory over No. 19 West Liberty (WV) University, in Wednesday’s season-opener in West Liberty, W.Va.

Pitt-Johnstown started fast and never looked back. Brendan Howard opened the match with a 4-3 decision over Corey Secrist at 125 lbs., and Matt Siszka won a 10-2 major decision over Steven Slack at 133 lbs.

After sixth-ranked Joey Alessandro won by forfeit at 141 lbs. to make it 13-0, defending National Champion Chris Eddins scored an 11-1 major decision over Miles Mizak in the 149-lb. bout to increase it to 17-0.

The Mountain Cats kept it going. At 157 lbs., Gage Thomas got a take down with :30 left in the third period to hold off Josh Cornell, 7-5, and returning All-American and fifth-ranked Austin pinned Jacob Ramsey at 4:26 to push it out to 26-0.

Brock Biddle followed with a 12-6 decision over Chance Morgan at 174 lbs., and Alex Delp held off Chris Cook, 7-5, at 174 lbs. to build the lead to 32-0.

In a match-up between Pitt-Johnstown’s fifth-ranked Niebauer and West Liberty’s seventh-ranked Logan Kemp at 197 lbs., Niebauer got an escape to begin the third period to break a 2-2- tie and defeat Kemp, 3-2.

Allan Beattie finished-up the Mountain Cat shutout with a 4-1 Decision over Ronnie D’Amico at 285 lbs. to set the final at 38-0.

With the loss, the Hilltoppers fell to 0-1.

Pitt-Johnstown travels to fifth-ranked Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Sunday, before making its 2018-19 home debut and open the PSAC schedule against 18th-ranked Millersville University on Friday, November 16 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.
