SOMERSET -- Somerset Hospital said in a release Friday it has officially signed a letter of intent with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to negotiate an affiliation.
Just last month Somerset Hospital said it was looking for an affiliation.
In a meeting with its board Thursday night, Somerset Hospital said it has decided to work with UPMC exclusively.
“An affiliation with UPMC will allow a greater opportunity for Somerset Hospital to grow, offer more specialty services to our patients, and provide the care close to their home,” hospital CEO Andy Rush said in a release.
The hospital expects it to take a few months until a definitive agreement is reached, but they expect an affiliation by the end of the year.
Somerset Hospital said it has been part of Somerset for at least 97 years and is a 111-licensed bed hospital.
UPMC said it has more than 30 hospitals, 600 doctors’ offices and outpatient sites, and is the largest medical insurer in western Pennsylvania.
