Police hold emotional press conference after arrest made in 1999 kidnapping cold case

State police held a press conference Thursday morning after arresting a man they said kidnapped a girl nearly 20 years ago.

State police held a press conference Thursday morning after arresting a man they said kidnapped a 10-year-old girl from Somerset County and assaulted her nearly 20 years ago.

Police said that on Sept. 19, 1999, Timothy Nelson of Maryland abducted the girl from a street in Shade Township, put her in his car and drove to West Virginia, where he assaulted her.

Nelson, now 50, was arrested Tuesday morning in Cumberland, Maryland by authorities.

Police said a brown paper bag used in the assault and tossed out the window of Nelson's car was the key to identifying him.

They said DNA found on the bag linked Nelson to two other similar cases, and fingerprints, also on the bag, were key to identifying Nelson nearly 20 years after the alleged crime.

Trooper Jeffery Brock, who worked the case for years gave an emotional account of when he found out the suspect had been identified.
