Sex abuse survivor running cross-country to raise awareness, funds
WEST DECATUR - A sex abuse survivor passed through Clearfield County Friday as part of his quest to run across the country to help other victims.
Ultra-endurance athlete Christian Griffith is running from New York City to San Francisco to raise awareness and funds to combat child abuse.
Griffith will run 30 miles a day, five days a week for the next five months.
"What I learned when I finally came out after 30 years of being sexually abused as a kid, was that there's an army of us (victims) out there," Griffith said.
Griffith said he was a victim of sexual abuse during his early teens.
Griffith said his goal is to raise $1 million for the Help for Children (HFC) foundation. The organization provides grants to the most effective and efficient child abuse prevention and treatment interventions in six countries, making the world a safer place for children.
"Anyone and everyone who has been through this or knows someone in their life who has been through this needs to seek treatment because it truly is the only way out," Griffith said. "Your past does not have to be your future."
Griffith's epic run began at Riverside Park in New York City March 19 and will end in San Francisco on Aug. 23.
