Report: Prisoner attacks 'sex offender' inmate for making comments about a child
SOMERSET, Pa. (WJAC) —
Somerset prison officials said a prisoner attacked another inmate because of comments he made about a 4-year-old girl.
According to the criminal complaint, 43-year-old Walter Martin overheard another inmate talking to his "sex offender buddies" about a young girl who was on a television show on Aug. 26. The complaint states Martin heard the inmate call the child cute and cuddly.
Martin, who is serving a life sentence, told investigators the comments made him angry because he has family members that are the same age as the girl, and he decided to attack the inmate, according to the complaint.
The next day, authorities said Martin tied a lock to a bootlace and struck the inmate about 15 times. The inmate lost consciousness after the fourth hit, the complaint states.
The inmate was taken to Somerset Community Hospital. Authorities said the inmate received 14 stitches, five staples and two sutures to his head.
Court documents show Martin is charged with assault by life prisoner, aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment.
