Police: Man fires 121 rounds into cabin, turns gun on himself

LARIMER TOWNSHIP – State police launched an investigation after a man fired 121 rounds into a hunting cabin in Somerset County and then turned the gun on himself.

According to a release, Donald Smodic was drinking at a hunting cabin with Walter Siwula Saturday morning when the two men got into a fight.

That’s when Smodic left the cabin and started to pack up his car which included two semi-automatic long guns and ammunition.

Troopers said Smodic took the guns and fired 121 rounds into the cabin while Siwula was still inside.

Siwula wasn’t injured, but Smodic did take off.

After an extensive search, police said Smodic’s body was found in Westmoreland County.

It appears he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

State police said the incident remains under investigation.
