Officials: SCI-Somerset inmate charged with attempted homicide

SOMERSET - Somerset Borough police said Wednesday attempted homicide charges have been filed against an inmate at State Correctional Institution at Somerset.

Officials said William Amos Cramer, 26, has also been charged with assault by life prisoner, aggravated assault, assault by prisoner and simple assault.

According to authorities. Cramer was taken from SCI-Somerset to Somerset Hospital on Sunday, Dec. 3 for treatment.

In a criminal complaint and accompanying affidavit of probable cause filed by Officer Justin Evans, it is alleged that Cramer used a razor blade to attack an SCI-Somerset corrections officer while in a room on the third floor of the hospital.

According to the affidavit, Cramer’s stated intention was to slit the throat of the officer. Two other corrections officers were present when Cramer launched his attack by lunging at the victim officer as he was adjusting one of Cramer’s handcuffs.

The attacked officer observed Cramer’s sudden movement and noticed an object in Cramer’s hand and was able to move out of the way without suffering any injury.

According to Cramer, he had accessed the razor blade inside SCI-Somerset, swallowed it and then passed it in a bathroom at the hospital. He was able to conceal it on his person until his attack on the officer.

Apparently, Cramer, a self-avowed white supremacist, viewed the victim officer as being friendly with African American inmates at SCI-Somerset and found this offensive, officials said.

Officials said Cramer has been transferred to SCI-Forest.

In 2013, Cramer was convicted in the murder of his cellmate, William Sherry, 28, at the Cambria County Prison. Cramer was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole.

In 2015, Cramer was found guilty in Northumberland County Court of slashing a state correctional officer’s throat. He also tried to kill another correctional officer with a shank because the officer was friendly with black inmates, officials said.
