Injured Altoona player returns to practice, inspires team

Altoona high school's Matt Streightiff returns to visit his teammates after injury that almost paralyzed him.

Altoona – His family and coaches said it’s “nothing less than miraculous.” An Altoona high school football player said he thought he would be paralyzed from the waist down after an injury in a game against Chambersburg on September 14th. He surprised teammates by walking into a practice session.

“One of their biggest guys hit me from the shoulder and head then someone, I don’t know who, hit me in my lower back,” Matt Streightiff recalls. “And from there I couldn't feel anything from my chest to my toes.”

Streightiff said he thought he may never walk again, but all he wanted was to get back out on the football field.

“I just wanted to get back up,” he said. “

After days in the hospital, he could return to the field and surprise his teammates.

Streightiff can't play for the rest of the season. He said he’s hoping to be suited up next year as a senior, but for now, he will be on the sideline with the coaching staff.
