Former NBA player speaks to local students about addiction
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) —
A former NBA player visited local high school seniors Thursday.
Senior classes from several schools attended the event at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College.
Former basketball player Chris Herren spoke to them about recovering from heroin addiction.
After playing basketball and battling with addiction for several years, he was able to reach sobriety with the help of his family and friends.
Herren now uses his experiences to help young people who may be struggling with the same issues.
"As Chris just said, if we can just touch one life, one kid, that doesn't go down that path, it's a wonderful feeling. And I truly believe the case," said program founder Shane Downey.
Herren has been advocating against substance use since 2009.
He is brought to the area through funds raised at basketball tournament and through donations from businesses in the community.
