Woman dies in Elk County house fire

BROCKPORT – One woman is dead after a house fire in Elk County Tuesday night, according to a release.

State police identified Terri Gustafson, 50, as the victim who died in the fire.

They said Gustafson's body was found on the second floor of the home on Howard Road in Brockport.

Family member Jan Morrow said they believe flames and smoke trapped Gustafson in her bedroom. Morrow said Gustafson recently moved in with her mother and grandmother.

A release said Donna Truesdale, 70, and Elizabeth Hetrick, 95, were also inside the home but were able to make it out safely.

Firefighters received the call around 11 p.m. Tuesday and were on scene fighting the flames into early Wednesday morning.

"It hurts and just makes you want to cry," said neighbor Debbie Fields. "We've been neighbors since July of 1999."

The American Red Cross is assisting the family, and a state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

"The only room we can get into is my Aunt Irene's (Hetrick's), the rest of the house is just lost," Morrow said. "They probably will need some help. Unfortunately, the home is not insured, so they're going to be going through some tough times."

The American Red Cross provided 6 News with a list of the clothes the women are in need of:

-Pants: 14-16

-Shirts: M-XL

-Shoes: 6, 7 1/2

-Bras: 40B, 42D

Donations can be dropped off at 12 Howard Road in Brockport.
