State police are investigating the death of a 7-year-old boy in Huntingdon County.

The boy was found Thursday along Huntingdon Furnace Road in Franklin Township around 7 a.m. by a bus driver.

Police confirmed the child was hit by a vehicle. They said the driver did not stop to help the child.

Tyrone Area School District Superintendent Cathy Harlow announced Thursday morning that the boy was struck at his bus stop.

Harlow said the boy, a second grade student at Tyrone Elementary School, was found by the bus driver on route.

The bus driver called 911 and remained at the scene until first responders arrived, Harlow said.

The following statement was posted on the district's Facebook page:

On-site counseling is being provided by district personnel and additional crisis resources for students who are aware of the situation as well as staff. We will share more information as we process through this tragic situation.

Harlow said the bus driver and district personnel are assisting state police in the investigation.

Authorities obtained a search warrant for a suspected vehicle to see if there was evidence of involvement in the incident.

Police spoke with the driver of the vehicle. The driver was traveling at a low speed in the area and did not know the boy was there, according to an incident report.

Police did not say if the driver was arrested.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who was driving in this area during the morning hours is asked to call PSP Huntingdon.
