Blair County Coroner identifies 6-year-old boy killed after a dog attack

LOGAN TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Blair County Coroner Patricia Ross identified the 6-year-old boy killed Thursday after a dog attack as Gauge Eckenrode.

According to Logan Township Police Chief David Reese, around 6 p.m., officers arrived at a home on Gesser Avenue in the Lakemont area where EMS was already providing medical treatment to the boy.

Reese said it was learned that the 6-year-old was seriously injured by the family dog and he was rushed to UPMC Altoona, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the dog was a rescued pitbull and had belong to the family for several years.

Police said family members tried to stop the dog during the attack by stabbing it. The dog was killed by police.

It is unclear what provoked the pitbull.

Gauge was a student at Baker Elementary School in the Altoona Area School District.

The district said they have extra counseling services and extra support services in place for Friday.
