Report: O'Brien to Texans "Imminent"

By: 6 Sports Staff

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Will he stay or will he go? Penn State head football coach Bill O'Brien is on the verge of bolting Happy Valley for the Heart of Texas.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen, citing NFL sources, said on an airing of the "NFL Live" program that a deal could occur by Tuesday afternoon for the Houston Texans to name O'Brien as their head coach.

An NFL.com report stated the Texans had wanted to interview San Diego offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, but due to the Chargers berth in the AFC playoffs, Houston will not conduct that interview.

O'Brien was reportedly interviewed by the Texans at his Cape Cod home December 26.

In two seasons at Penn State, O'Brien led the Nittany Lions to a 15-9 record. He also led the school out of one of its darkest periods following the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal and the NCAA sanctions that followed, which included the loss of scholarships and a four-year bowl game ban.

One Nittany Lions player told 6 Sports on Monday that O'Brien had not yet contacted the team.
