Listen to St. Francis Head Coach Rob Krimmel talk about playing Navy at the War Memorial
JOHNSTOWN -- Saint Francis, which last called the War Memorial home during the early 1970s, will host the Midshipmen of Navy at the venue on Nov. 11, 2013 at 7 p.m. as a part of the City of Johnstowns Veterans Day celebration.
It is great for Saint Francis University and for the Cambria Country War Memorial to have a Division I mens basketball game against Navy, to honor our Veterans, SFU Director of Athletics Bob Krimmel said.
This will not be a one-time event, we aim to build a relationship again here in Johnstown and keep the tradition moving forward, Krimmel continued.
The game will mark the first SFU regular season home game played away from the Stokes Center since a Jan. 2, 1990 game at the Jaffa Mosque in Altoona. The Red Flash defeated Youngstown State 97-85 in that contest.
Today is a rebirth of an initiative moving forward where we are able to showcase a high level of basketball in Johnstown, said Cambria County War Memorial General Manager Thomas Grenell. This could not have been made possible without these great people from Saint Francis University.
One of four home courts the team has used since basketball became a sport at Saint Francis in 1905, the War Memorial served as the backdrop for many early games against Duquesne and Saint Vincent before becoming the teams fulltime home from 1971 to 1973.
Saint Francis opens up its 2013 campaign at Fordham on Nov. 8.
