Woman arrested after police find children alone with dogs, drug paraphernalia

By: Maria Miller

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- A Johnstown woman is headed to jail after police found her two young children home alone with the family's pit bulls.

Police were called to the apartment in the Hornerstown section of the city around 2 Monday afternoon. They said the original call was for the report of a pit bull on the loose. When they got there, along with animal control, they said there were two pit bulls: one extremely aggressive, the other still a puppy. There were also two young children alone inside.

As 6 News pulled on scene, the childrens father had just rounded the corner carrying several bags of groceries. Minutes later the children's mother came running down the sidewalk screaming, "Why would he leave them? This is crazy!" She kept saying it over and over again, telling officers he was supposed to be watching the kids.
"I didn't leave them, I really didn't sir," she told officers.

The mother was arrested as the owner of the home cameand picked up the children, who appeared to be in preschool.

Police said the inside of the apartment was not in good condition and said there was drug paraphernalia, including several syringes, lying out in the open.

The woman's name has not been released but police said she'll likely be charged with endangering the welfare of her children and drug charges. As for the father, police said so far his story seems to add up. They said he has surrendered the aggressive pit bull; the other one will remain in his care and will be checked on by animal control in a few weeks.

Neighbors told 6 News it's not the first time the dogs have gotten loose, saying they often run around the neighborhood.
