Friends and Famers Co-op host membership celebration

By:Lauren Hensley

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.-- A grocery store unlike any other may be coming to Centre County.  One group in State College is aiming to build a member-owned cooperative grocery store in State College and will sell food by local farmers. The group, called Friends and Farmers Cooperative, kicked off a membership event Sunday to showcase the benefits of locally-grown food and to start signing up members.

This day is an event for people to come out and invest as member owners in the cooperative, when you invest you are saying you are willing and ready to support this venture in our community that we hope to be a member-owned and operated grocery store that would produce local and sustainable produce, Sarah Potter, interim president of Friends and Farmers Co-op said.

Two hundred guests RSVPED for the event.  The first step to making this project happen is to fund a study to examine area competition.
