By: WJAC Web Staff and The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Officials are on scene at an East Harlem apartment building in New York that exploded and collapsed, causing 17 injuries and two deaths.

The New York City Fire Department said 17 people were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Officials said residents heard a large explosion in the apartment building around 9 a.m. Wednesday. A second building was also heavily damaged, officials said.

Officials said sidewalks are littered with broken glass from storefront and apartment windows.

Police said the reports came in from around Park Avenue between 114th and 117th streets. The site is located near Metro-North commuter railroad tracks off the northeastern tip of Central Park.
