Somerset Co. man pleads to manslaughter charge in baby's death

SOMERSET, Pa. -- A Somerset County man has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the smothering death of his girlfriend's infant daughter in November 2011.

Cody Schartiger, 28, of Ursina, entered the plea Tuesday. He faces up to 22 years in prison on the manslaughter count and a count of reckless endangerment for injuring his own 3-year-old son in November 2010.

Baylee Svenungsen, 18 months, died of asphyxiation due to smothering and neck compression before she was found in a crib, investigators said. They said Schartiger smothered the infant.

Baylee's mother, Amanda Svenungsen, 25, pleaded guilty in 2012 and sentenced to 74 days time-served in jail on endangerment charges related to the death.

Prosecutors said Schartiger abused the girl while her mother was sleeping at their Ursina home.

Schartiger's son was injured during a disciplinary "time out," investigators said.
