Accident on I-99 shuts down southbound lane

By: WJAC Web Staff

LOGAN TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- An accident early Monday morning shut down Interstate 99 southbound in Blair County.

Police said Brendan Kifer, 21, was traveling south on Interstate 99 when he lost control of his car between the Frankstown and Plank Road exits.

Kifer and his car traveled onto the east berm then went across both lanes of Interstate 99, police said.

Police said the car then went onto the west berm and, while spinning, struck a large light pole and the cement base, knocking the pole down.

Kifer then struck another cement-anchored sign labeled Plank Road. Kifer was then ejected from his car, police said.

Police said after the second impact the car came to rest along the west berm facing east direction.

Moments later the vehicle caught fire and that fire was extinguished by two passing truck drivers with their on board fire extinguishers.

Kifer was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Camaro, which suffered severe damage.

Kifer was taken to UPMC Altoona and was listed in critical condition.

The investigation continues and alcohol as well as speed is a likely contributor to the accident.
