Fire crews battle flames at Somerset Co. building

By: WJAC Web Staff

JENNER TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A fast-moving fire and very cold temperatures made it difficult for firefighters to contain a blaze that destroyed a Somerset County building.

Fire crews were called to the Oakton Hotel on Golf Course Road in Jenner Township at about 3 a.m. Monday, officials said.

Two people were living inside the building when the fire started and both were able to make it out without injuries and call for help, officials said.

Firefighters said the freezing temperatures and winds made it a challenge to contain the fire, plus crews had to haul water more than 1- miles away.

Crews from Somerset and Cambria counties responded to the scene, but were kept at a distance as the structure burned because of smoke clouding the area, officials said.

There was no immediate information about what may have stated the fire. A state police fire marshal was called to investigate.
