Playing in snow piles not safe for children
By: WJAC Web Staff
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Road officials are warning parents that kids could get seriously hurt, or even killed, on snow piles left behind from plowing.
Kids have been playing on the mounds for decades, and it looks like a castle to many children, with endless digging and building possibilities.
When I was a kid we (would) always tunnel in these snow banks because that was fun, said Road Superintendent Steven McDonald.
McDonald said he wants parents to realize the dangers associated with children playing in the mounds.
If a kid is in that pile on the back side, thats not a good thing, said McDonald.
Snow plow drivers paying attention to the streets might not see children playing and if the children are behind a snowbank, the drivers said it is nearly impossible for them to know.
If you have a snow bank in (a) back yard or on a farm, thats fine, but when you get on a public cul-de-sac, its not safe, said McDonald.
McDonald said there is no safe time for kids to play on large snow piles because you never know when the plows are coming through.
