Snow accumulation causes risks with storm drains
By: WJAC Web Staff
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- After the region was left with a snowy aftermath new dangers could create hazard for some living near storm drains.
Right now, we are seeing a lot of intersections being congested from the snow accumulation, said Southmont Borough Manager Richard Wargo.
Snow piling on storm drains is important to ensure they stay clear.
So when the melt occurs, said Wargo. We have water to flow into the catch basins.
Catch basins are storm water drains that link to the underground storm system that are usually located at intersections.
They are the main artery that picks up water that flows to the street.
Pooling could occur if the storm drain becomes clogged.
We are getting a continuous accumulation, he said. You can only push it back so far. It gets to the point where we would have to haul it out.
Wargo said they have not had to haul the snow out but crews are working around the clock to ensure the mess stays clear.
After 6 News crews checked the Little Conemaugh River the water level was low but when we receive the warmer weather those levels could change.
Crews also suggest to not clear a storm drain yourself for it could be too dangerous.
The only things crews are urging are for residents to keep their cars away from the intersections.
