Jay Paterno kicks off lieutenant governor campaign

By: WJAC Web Staff

CENTRE HALL, Pa. -- Former Penn State quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno officially threw his hat into the Pennsylvania political ring at a weekend event, solidifying his plans to run for lieutenant governor of the commonwealth.

Paterno officially kicked off his campaign Sunday afternoon at an event coordinated by the Centre County Democratic Committee in Centre Hall.

Paterno, son of late Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno, told supporters at the event that he feels that this is the right time to run and will focus his campaign on educational issues.

"That's going to be my issue," Paterno said. "My number one issue is education because education creates employment, which creates equality."

Paterno has spent the past few days circulating petitions to get his name on the May 20 primary ballot. He enters the lieutenant governor's race with a handful of other competitors.

On hand at the event were several local Democratic leaders, including two Democratic gubernatorial candidates, Katie McGinty and Jack Wagner.

Paterno announced last week his intent to enter the race. In a statement, Paterno said Pennsylvania needs new leadership and he wants to bring change to Harrisburg and focus on families, education, jobs and equality.

"I am not a politician, but someone from a family dedicated to hard work, public service and charity to all," Paterno said.
