Penn State working with State College Borough in an effort to become greener

By: Lauren Hensley

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- A new initiative aimed at helping State College become a little greener kicked off Wednesday. The Sustainable Communities Collaborative is a team effort between borough leaders, Penn State students and faculty all working together to develop sustainable solutions the Borough can use in the community.

"So what we've done is worked with the borough to find out the projects and we look for faculty on campus that are teaching courses that are doing both issues around sustainability to help address that and we are interested in giving students this real-world experience," Sustainable Communities manager Terri Shupp said.

This is the second year for the initiative. Last year, six projects were worked on, including improving the management of rainwater runoff and encouraging a bicycling culture.
