Federal government agency looking into Penn State's sexual harassment cases

By: WJAC Web Staff and The Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A federal government agency is looking into Penn States handling of sexual harassment and sexual assault complaints to see if it responded immediately and appropriately.

Penn State was informed by the U.S Department of Education of the investigation Thursday.

Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine Hamon said the agency had concerns after reviewing Penn States sexual harassment policy.

A Penn State spokeswoman said the school is looking forward to working with federal officials.

Penn States crime data showed 56 forcible sex offenses on its main campus in 2012, 14 times the number reported in 2010.
