Thousands of gallons of milk spill on Bedford Co. property

By: Jackalyn Kovac

BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa. -- A milk truck carrying 6,000 gallons of milk on Covered Bridge Road in East St. Clair township lost control and hit a pole before rolling and striking a tree. About 4,000 gallons of raw milk spilled out. First responders acted quickly after learning exactly what the truck was carrying. Milk isn't considered a hazardous material, but it could have an impact on the local wildlife.

"It processes the oxygen in such a way that it can  kill any and all aquatic life," said Bedford Co. EMA Director David Cubbison.

Crews were on Covered Bridge Road for several hours working to contain the spill.

The electric company was called in to remove the damaged pole and downed power lines from the roadway.

Saturday's rain was welcome, yet also unwanted because of how it was affecting the spill.

"The rain is helping because it is diluting at this point, but it's also moving the product and that's what we really have to watch at this time to make sure it doesn't get into any major water sources," said Cubbison.

The driver of the truck was taken to Bedford Memorial Hospital to be checked out. Pennsylvania State police are investigating the crash. A cause is not known.
