UPMC nurses to allow strike if contract cannot be made

By: WJAC Web Staff

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Nurses at UPMC Altoona are prepared to strike.

Negotiations between the hospital and the nurses union started in the fall but have stalled.

The union said the hospital presented their final offer last week.

The union decided they would have a one day unfair labor practice strike on Feb. 11.

The unions said one of the main issues standing between the two sides is the ratio of nurses to patients.

You could end up having a one to three ratio in ICU, said UPMC Nurse Paula Stellabotte. Youll never know from day to day and thats no way to treat those in our community.

UPMC Altoona says claims that there are unfair practices are just a negotiation tactic by the union.

The hospital issued a statement saying it has done everything reasonable to reach an agreement with the union.

A spokesperson added that is no longer about organizing employees but rather creating a media spectacle to advance its political goals.
