ALTOONA, Pa. -- A Blair County man has been charged after police said he stole hand sanitizer from an area hospital to make alcoholic drinks.

The Altoona Mirror reported Friday Lee B. Ammerman, 51, of Altoona, is accused of stealing 12 containers of hand sanitizer from UPMC Altoona and using the liquid to drink for the alcohol.

Police said Ammerman would mix the alcohol with orange juice.

Police said an employee saw Ammerman steal a bottle of sanitizer in October and that the thefts continued into December with several bottles being stolen around Christmas.

UPMC Altoona police confronted Ammerman about the thefts on Jan. 2 and thats when he admitted to them, investigators said.

Police said Ammerman admitted to stealing a large amount of hand sanitizer containers. Each container was worth $6.65.

Court records show Ammerman is facing theft and receiving stolen property charges. He is due in court for a preliminary hearing in February.
