Other appeals also dismissed

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court judge has upheld an earlier court ruling to permit the demolition of a historical theatre in Centre County.

Following at 45-minute teleconference hearing Wednesday morning, the judge denied the request by the Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association to issue a stay in the demolition of the Garman Theatre in downtown Bellefonte.

The judge also dismissed recent appeals filed by BHCA to higher state courts following a Centre County court ruling in September permitting the demolition of the building.

The buildings owner, Ara Kervandjian, has proposed plans to tear down the theatre and the adjacent Hotel Do-De to build affordable workforce housing on the site.

The Bellefonte borough council voted 5-4 on Nov. 11 to allow Kervandjian to demolish the building.

Both buildings were left uninhabitable following a massive fire in September 2012.

6 News reporter Gary Sinderson was monitoring the developments of the hearing and is working to gather reaction to the ruling for 6 News beginning at 5.
