3 shot near Pgh. school; suspects in custody

By: The Associated Press and WJAC Web Staff

Officials say three students were shot outside a Pittsburgh high school and several people are in police custody.

Pittsburgh school district spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said the students were shot outside Brashear High School just after 3 p.m. Wednesday as they walked to a vehicle they'd all taken to school earlier in the day.

Pugh said their injuries appear to be non-life-threatening. She said one of the students was shot in the leg and foot, one was shot in the neck and shoulder, and one was grazed on the head.

According to WJAC-TV sister station WTOV9, Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard said the victims were taken to UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Mercy hospitals. All are in good to stable condition.

Richard said the victims are not cooperating with police. She said the incident may have some type of connection to another incident that happened at the school last month.

Pugh said the victims were not on school property but close by. She says one victim was found inside the school but either ran inside or was taken there by emergency crews and wasn't shot inside school.

Brashear is a magnet school about 2 miles south of downtown.
