Pa.'s gas drilling job figures raise questions

By: The Associated Press
HARRISBURG, Pa. --

Some economists are expressing doubts about Gov. Tom Corbett's campaign claim that the Marcellus Shale natural gas industry supports more than 200,000 jobs.

The statistic comes from a state Department of Labor and Industry report. It is the agency's estimate of employment in Pennsylvania at certain business sectors that have some sort of relationship to the Marcellus Shale.

But most of those employees were here before the drilling boom, and not all are necessarily involved in Marcellus Shale-related work.

Corbett aide Patrick Henderson says the more important point is that a significant number of people base their livelihoods on the industry.

Penn State University agricultural economics professor Tim Kelsey says a very rough calculation might be closer to 35,000, but a formal economic study takes time and money.
