Cambria County man killed in foggy crash

Heavy fog reported when driver tried to avoid collision

By Marc Stempka

CAMBRIA TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The weather likely played a role in the death of a Cambria County truck driver Tuesday morning who was trying to avoid an accident with a wind turbine blade.

Cambria County First Deputy Coroner Pete Long said Donald Gregg, 65, of Sankertown, was killed after the tri-axle truck he was driving swerved to avoid a collision with another truck that was hauling a wind turbine blade.

The accident happened at about 7:30 a.m. at the intersection with Route 422 and the Route 219 northbound ramps in Cambria Township, officials said.

Officials with Dauntless Fire Company, of Ebensburg, said the truck carrying the turbine blade was making a left turn on to Route 422 west from the Route 219 ramp at the same time Gregg was traveling west on Route 422.

Officials said Gregg swerved to avoid the collision, but drove off the road and crashed into an embankment.

Heavy fog was reported in the area at the time of the crash and Gregg may not have seen the turbine truck making the turn, officials said.

Long said Gregg was died at the scene.

Cambria Township police were investigating the crash.

Traffic in that area was stopped intermittently throughout the morning to allow for cleanup and investigation.
