Same-Sex couple married at home of State College mayor

By Gary Sinderson

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. Two men were married in the home of State College mayor Elizabeth Goreham Monday, despite a state ban on same-sex marriages.

The men said they got a marriage license in Montgomery Co. and now feel they're just among the first of what's to come in Pennsylvania.

The wedding took place Monday morning at the mayors home after she vowed, that if couples had a valid marriage license, she would do what she could to get them married.

The same sex marriage issue is now a federal court fight, but some couples aren't waiting for the legal outcome.

It was here on 6 News several weeks ago when Goreham said she was willing to perform wedding ceremonies for same sex couples.  That story went statewide and the couple who got married today said they contacted her on Facebook and then lined up the ceremony.

This is like a road trip, newlywed Gregory Scalzo said.

For Scalzo and Joseph Davis, its a possible road trip into history, being one of the first same-sex couples to marry in Pennsylvania.

Goreham didnt perform the ceremony as she said she would.  Rather, she ran into a problem with the existing state law that could mean legal problems for her and the borough.

It would violate my oath of office and Im not going to do that, Goreham said.

But Goreham said she found a pastor willing to perform the ceremony.

It was important to do it here, Davis said.

Were all equal in the eyes of God, so we should have the same rights, Scalzo said.

After the ceremony, it was back to Montgomery Co. to have their marriage registered.

At last count, more than 110 marriage licenses have been issued in Montgomery Co.

Goreham said she's been contacted by at least one other couple about a wedding ceremony.
