Johnstown Free Medical Clinic receives grant to expand services

By: Kerri Corrado

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- The Johnstown Free Medical Clinic, located in downtown Johnstown, received a $66,000 grant to expand its medical services from the Department of Health after operating on a limited budget.

The Physician General of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will visit the clinic on March 18, in hopes of increasing medical help throughout our area.

The medical staff is volunteers, providing free services and prescriptions to more than 600 people a year.

"Knowing the need in this community for low income uninsured people, we will be able to provide additional services to them, Executive Director of the Johnstown Free Medical Clinic Rosealie Danchanko said.

Danchanko says many times people are choosing between food and medication, hoping this grant will greatly help those who seek medical attention.

"This grant gives us opportunity to expand our services. We have been operating on a limited budget with limited staff, Danchanko said.

The grant will help keep the clinic doors open for longer hours, allowing the staff to help more patients, and a physician assistant will be on hand.

Russel Verbano says he was suffering with high blood pressure and diabetes, but now 11 months later its controlled.

"The reason why I am here, my very essence, every fiber in my body is here because the clinic saved my life, Verbano said.

He says and his heart goes out to the staff that stood by his side, welcoming him with open arms to the clinic.

Everyone should wear sunglasses   and the reason for that is that you will be blinded by the volunteers halos, he added.

To make an appointment, call the Johnstown free medical clinic at (814) 534-6242. You must have proof of income and no insurance.
