Altoona PD Hosts 'Virtual' Ride-ALong

By: Jackalyn Kovac

ALTOONA, Pa. -- The Altoona Police Department takes pride in its active social media use. With thousands of people following its Facebook page, the department works hard to keep people updated.

Friday evening, Sgt. Brian Freiwald sent numerous tweets and posts about what he was doing throughout his shift.

"I'm trying to keep it as interesting as possible. It's not only words, I put some pictures, some accidents and I try to keep the posts as current as possible," says Freiwald. "It's very popular, people enjoy it. It gives a different perspective on what we do on a day-to-day basis."

This is the second time the department has done a 'Tweet from the Beat Ride-A-Long,' both times included the mayor.

"I was real excited to do this. All day, I've been excited to do a ride along," says Mayor Matt Pacifico. "I think it's something everybody dreams of doing as a little kid. It was really cool to go out and do that."

Updates form the ride-along were posted on Facebook and Twitter through out the evening Friday. Posts ranged from a 911 misdial to a warrant issue arrest.

"This gives them everything, from the most minor of calls to the most serious," says Freiwald.
