USS Somerset arrives in Philadelphia for commissioning

By: WJAC Web Staff and The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- A Navy ship named for the 9/11 attack site in Somerset County has arrived in Philadelphia for its commissioning ceremony.

The USS Somerset moved up the Delaware River on Friday, arriving at the U.S. Naval Yard at about 3 p.m.

The amphibious transport dock is the last of the three vessels honoring 9/11 victims and first responders. It joins the USS New York and the USS Arlington.

On Sept. 11, 2011, hijackers overtook United Flight 93. Passengers on the plane worked to get control of the aircraft, which crash landed in a field in Stonycreek Township.

The USS Somerset will be open for public tours beginning next week. The private commissioning ceremony, which officially puts the ship in service, is scheduled for March 1.

The $1.2 billion vessel will then head to its home port in San Diego. It's designed to launch helicopters, tilt-rotor aircraft and assault watercraft.
