More details released in capture of Cambria Co. homicide suspect

MANASSAS, Va. -- Police are releasing more details about the capture of a Cambria County homicide suspect found hiding in the basement of a home in northern Virginia.

Prince William County police officials said Earl Patrick Mitchell Jr., 20, was arrested after a seven-hour manhunt through communities in the Manassas area on Thursday.

Mitchell is accused of shooting and killing Jareek Adams and wounding another person on Jan. 25, at the Oakhurst Homes in Johnstown.

Police said Mitchell was seen driving a car in Manassas at about 1:30 p.m. After running the registration on the vehicle, officers learned it was connected to a homicide in Pennsylvania.

Police said the officer tried stopping the vehicle, but Mitchell would not stop, prompting a pursuit that continued through Prince William County, ending near the Prince William Parkway, when Mitchell crashed the car on a sidewalk.

Police said Mitchell ran from the vehicle into a nearby neighborhood. A passenger in the car did not flee and was taken into custody. That person, who was not identified, did not face any charges.

As police learned that Mitchell was wanted on homicide charges, several departments were called in to help with the search for him.

In addition to Manassas City Police and Prince William County Police, troopers with the Virginia State Police, the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force and a helicopter from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency were involved in the search for Mitchell.

At about 8 p.m., officers learned Mitchell was possibly hiding in the basement of a home and found him hiding in a storage area of that residence.

Police said two people who were in the home first found Mitchell and were able to get away from the house to notify authorities.

Mitchell was found with a loaded handgun, police said. No one was injured during the apprehension.

Johnstown police Chief Craig Foust said Mitchell is facing several charges in Virginia and will need to wait for those to be filed before he can be returned to Cambria County.

"Due to his actions in the pursuit and afterwards, he's facing serious charges down there. Their intent is to file multiple charges," Foust said. "That'll be up to the [district attorney's] office."

Mitchell was being held in the Prince William-Manassas Regional Adult Detention Center.
