Penn State expected to name new president today

By: WJAC Web Staff and The Associated Press

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State Board of Trustees is expected to name the school's next president at a press conference this afternoon.

Penn State officials have not publicly identified the person, but multiple media sources have reported Florida State University President Eric Barron will be named the next leader at PSU.

Over the weekend, Barron publically commented to the Tallahassee Democrat about leaving FSU. Barron is a former dean of Penn State's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, having spent 20 years at the school.

WJAC-TV news partner the Centre Daily Times reported Barron arrived on the University Park campus at about 10 a.m., and gave waiting media a thumbs up, stating it felt "wonderful" to be back to PSU.

Members of the PSU BOT will hold a special meeting beginning at 12 p.m. at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel to specifically discuss the next president. The meeting is open to the public.

Following the BOT meeting, there will be a 1:15 p.m. press conference.

The process to find a successor to PSU President Rodney Erickson has been a 15 months. Erickson took over as the school's president in November 2011, following the dismissal of former president Graham Spanier in the early fallout of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal.

Erickson announced his plans to retire in June months ago. There was wide-spread speculation that a new president was to be named in November of last year, but a trustees meeting surrounding that announcement was abruptly canceled.

6 News will live-stream this afternoon's meeting and press conference on www.wjactv.com following 6 News at Noon.
