Furnace fire damages Somerset Co. home

SOMERSET TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A family can no longer stay in their home after a furnace fire damaged part of their house in Somerset County.

Fire officials said a woman who lives at the home on Marlwood Drive in Somerset Township had taken her kids to school and came home at about 9 a.m. Tuesday to find smoke and flames coming from the house.

Somerset Fire Department Assistant Chief Stephen Borosky said it appeared the fire started from cinders falling from a wood furnace.

"Luckily this occurred during the day, [and] luckily the homeowner was able to come home," Borosky said. "I would assume if the homeowner didn't return when she did, that the fire would have been more extensive."

No one was hurt in the fire and damage isn't believed to be too extensive, officials said. The will not be able to stay in the house until the house is cleaned and the furnace is repaired.
