Police: Domestic situation sparks house fire

By: WJAC Web Staff

SCALP LEVEL, Pa. -- A man is in custody and facing charges after police said he set a Cambria County home on fire because of problems he was having with his girlfriend.

Windber police said Kevin Hamilton, 52, set the Richland Avenue home on fire in Scalp Level at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Officers responded to the home to check on Hamilton after he called officers and threatened to end his own life, police said. When officers got to the home it was full of smoke.

Police said Hamilton lit a pile of clothes on fire in the basement. Officers were able to put most of the fire out, but Hamilton wasn't in the home. Several fire departments were also called to the home to get the fire under control.

Police said Hamilton was having some kind of ongoing domestic problems with his girlfriend, possibly causing the series of events to unfold.

Police were able to track Hamilton down to a home in Johnstown where he was taken into custody. He is now in the Cambria County prison.

Hamilton is facing several charges, including arson and cruelty to animal charges because a cat died in the fire.
