Special Olympics kicked off Sunday

By: WJAC Web Staff

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Nearly 350 athletes arrived in Cambria County this weekend for the Special Olympics winter games.

The games kicked off Sunday night with a ceremony and parade in downtown Johnstown.

There were five sports featured in this year's games with athletes attending from across Pennsylvania and from Virginia, Maryland and Delaware.

The events span from the War Memorial Arena to Hidden Valley to Blue Knob and Planet Ice.

6 News caught up with some of the athletes and asked what they are looking forward to.

I like to ski faster, said athlete Sebastian Joynes.

But after many times of learning how to ski, I finally became the greatest skier ever, said athlete Dillon Johnson.

The winter games have been held in the Johnstown area for decades.
