Rep. Sam Smith announces retirement

By: WJAC Web Staff and The Associated Press

HARRISBURG -- Pennsylvania House Speaker Sam Smith, of Jefferson County, announced Tuesday he won't be running for another term and will retire this year.

Smith said his heart isn't in the job anymore and that he can't give the constituents of the 66th district his full commitment any longer. Smith, 58, told friends and associates his plans in private on Monday. His term will end Nov. 30.

Smith's decision will end his service as the top state House official after four years. Smith has been a member of the state House for 14 terms, beginning in 1987.

Smith became speaker in 2011 after nearly eight years as the House Republican floor leader, serving through a time when a corruption investigation by the state attorney general's office resulted in jail terms for five former top House lawmakers.

In addition to Jefferson County, Smith's district also includes parts of Armstrong and Indiana counties.

Smith is a 1973 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School and a 1978 graduate of Penn State University.
