STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The long-awaited development of a downtown State College building may be right around the corner, according to the towns mayor.
State College Mayor Elizabeth Goreham said a groundbreaking for the Fraser Centre could take place in February.
The project has been long delayed since its conception in 2005. The building is to be built on a vacant lot at the corner of Fraser Street and West Beaver Avenue.
Goreham said the plans for the building appear to be on track. The building is to be a mixed use development, including residential and retail space.
The project was sold to another partnership whos going to be building it, Goreham said. [It will be built] with the same plans and theyre finalizing the plans right now.
The project has been approved by the borough planning commission and planning department, Goreham said. The developers are still looking for interested tenants.
Penn State University was expected to be a major tenant for the project, but following the unraveling of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal in 2011, the school backed out of the project.
The removal of Penn State from the development created delays, along with repeated financing problems.
The development plans call for a hotel, retail space, condominiums and a restaurant.
