House destroyed by fire in Clearfield Co.

CHESTER HILL, Pa. -- A state police fire marshal will be investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a home in Clearfield County and caused injuries to two firefighters, fire officials said.

Chester Hill Fire Chief Ryan Haggans said the fire started at the home at 306 Laura St. in Chester Hill at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, but it rekindled at about 1 a.m., keeping crews at the scene into the early hours of Monday morning.

Haggans said no one in the house was injured in the fire, but two firefighters suffered injuries while battling the flames.

One firefighter cut his knee and had to receive stitches and a second firefighter suffered chest pains, Haggans said.

Haggans said the family believed a malfunctioning furnace may have caused the fire, but a state police fire marshal will determine the official cause.

When crews arrived at the scene, flames were shooting from the first and second floor of the home, Haggans said. It took crews about 45 minutes to contain the fire.

Haggans said the fire rekindled at about 1 a.m., with the bulk of that fire coming from the second floor.

Crews were able to get that fire out in about 30 minutes, Haggans said.

The cold temperatures and two frozen fire hydrants in the area made battling the fire difficult, Haggans said. At least 35 firefighters were at the scene throughout the night.

The American Red Cross was assisting the family, Haggans said.

Haggans thanked Highway Pizza for donating coffee and opening their doors to help firefighters to stay warm through the fire fight.
