Volunteers play Santa for local elderly
By: Marc Stempka
DUNCANSVILLE, Pa. -- Through the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, some people may be overlooked when it comes to receiving a gift, but one local organization was making sure some area senior citizens would receive a gift this holiday season.
Volunteers wrapped gifts for area seniors Thursday at the Hollidaysburg Church of the Brethren. More than 200 seniors will be receiving gifts through the program sponsored by Home Instead Senior Cares Be a Santa to a Senior program.
The program was supported by Autumn Estates, Wesners Claysburg Manor, Valley View, Golden Living Center Hillview, area retailers and community members.
Home Instead Community Service Representative Endy Reindl said community members and businesses displayed gift tags for gift distribution so donations could be purchased for the seniors.
If they dont have the family, if they dont get visitors, you know that someone is out there caring for you, Reindl said. Its not strictly, you know, you seeing that nurse day in or day out, its that extra person in the room.
Community volunteers, Home Instead employees and Altoona Area High School Key Club students helped wrap the gifts.
