EBENSBURG, Pa. A man was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of killing his cellmate in the Cambria County prison.

William Cramer, 22, was sentenced to life in a state prison without parole Monday by Cambria County Judge Patrick Kinery.

Cramer was found guilty last month of killing William Sherry, 28, of Northern Cambria, by strangling him with a bed sheet while the two were in the same cell at the Ebensburg prison in August 2012.

Prosecutors said Cramer tried to make Sherrys death look like a suicide, just hours after the two had been moved into the same cell.

The defense said Cramer acted in the heat of the moment and didn't intend to kill Sherry, so he shouldn't have been convicted of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said Cramer, who is white, disliked Sherry because he thought he'd fathered a biracial child, which authorities said wasn't true.

Cramer was also convicted of aggravated assault and assault by a prisoner. He was in the prison in Augsut 2012 waiting to be transferred to a state prison in Fayette County.
