ZipCar: Newest transportation option in State College

Don't have a car and need a ride in State College? Well that won't be a problem starting Thursday morning.

State College Borough is teaming up with ZipCar to add another environmentally-friendly transportation option for people who can take them beyond the bus stop.

The car-sharing company allows students ages 18 and older and residents ages 21 and older to borrow a car, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The fee to join for students is $25, $60 for everyone else, plus the hourly rate of $7.50 or $69 for the day.

There are five Zip cars in State College. They are parked at the Beaver garage, Beaver lot, and McCallister deck. That price includes gas, insurance, and up to 180 miles.

"A lot of young professionals and young students don't want to own a car but still want flexibility to go to Walmart, take a day trip to Tussey Mountain, or somewhere else," said Courtney Hayden of State College Borough.

The program kicks off with an event Thursday morning at the Beaver parking lot.
