By: Marc Stempka

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. A Penn State University student was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle in State College early Thursday morning.

State College police said witnesses told investigators an unidentified male student stepped into the path of a vehicle at the intersection of South Atherton Street and West Fairmount Avenue at about 2 a.m.

The pedestrian suffered a major head injury and was taken by medical helicopter to UPMC Altoona, police said.

Police said an accident reconstructionist was brought in to assist with the investigation.

Police said investigators were working to determine whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.

If any charges were to be filed, police said they may be filed against the pedestrian.

Information on the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was not released.
