Truck driver falls off bridge into river

Driver was conscious and alert when rescued

By: Marc Stempka

BRADFORD TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Police in Clearfield County said a Tennessee truck driver fell more than 100 feet from a highway bridge into a river below.

State police at Clearfield said Bobbie Jo Merrell, 66, of Johnson City, Tenn., fell off the bridge after having exited his truck to check damage that was done after colliding with a bridge side barrier.

Police said while on the bridge Merrell somehow fell approximately 120 feet, but it was unclear how or why he fell.

Police said Merrell was stopped in the area of mile marker 121 on Interstate 80 along the Wolf Run Bridge that spans the Susquehanna River in Bradford Township.

Police said once in the water, Merrell was able to make it to the shore and was rescued.

Police said Merrell was flown to UPMC Altoona trauma center with abdominal injuries, but was conscious and alert.

The crash happened at about 11 a.m. and crews had to close I-80 in that area for a short time, officials said.
